Use Emotional Intelligence to Increase your Team’s Effectiveness

I had a great time delivering a workshop in Chester this week titled “Use Emotional Intelligence to Increase your Team’s Effectiveness”.

Why do some highly qualified and apparently capable managers produce less successful outcomes than other seemingly less qualified individuals? The answer is often in their levels of Emotional Intelligence.emotional intelligence

If you are a manager or leader in any capacity I highly recommend you develop your skill set around understanding, using and managing emotions, this will help you improve the quality of your communication and lead your team to achieve higher levels of success.

It was Daniel Goleman who first brought the term “emotional intelligence” to the forefront back in 1995. I recommend reading his book as a great introduction into Emotional intelligence:

Goleman found that while the qualities traditionally associated with leadership—such as intelligence, toughness, determination, and vision—are required for success, they are insufficient. Truly effective leaders are also distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence, which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill.” source

The ground-breaking best-seller that redefines intelligence and success Does IQ define our destiny? Daniel Goleman argues that our view of human intelligence is far too narrow, and that our emotions play major role in thought, decision making and individual success. Self-awareness, impulse control, persistence, motivation, empathy and social deftness are all qualities that mark people who excel: whose relationships flourish, who are stars in the workplace. With new insights into the brain architecture underlying emotion and rationality, Goleman shows precisely how emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us.

Emotional intelligence has a huge impact on your professional success , in fact emotional intelligence it the strongest predictor of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership. By becoming more self-aware and improving your emotional intelligence it can impact in many areas, including:

  • Become an Emotionally Resilient Leader
  • Learn Enhanced Communication Skills to Strengthen Team Dynamics
  • Develop Self Awareness and Empathy
  • Manage Emotional States for Improved Outcomes
  • Identify your ‘Triggers’ – Learn Specific Self-Management Strategies
  • Harness Stress and Use it Productively
  • Create High Levels of Resilience to Perform under Pressure
  • Improve the Quality of ALL your Meaningful Relationships

Are you the best ‘people magnet’ you can be?

Learn to be an expert about connecting with people, if you can master the art of turning contacts into relationships in business, as well as life you will have unlimited success. Establish common ground with people to initially first connect, after trust builds, the relationship will move to a deeper level. people magnet

WOW! THEM TO WOO THEM

The secret is to give value first. The power of building the strongest relationships you can have is to have other people wanting to connect with you! Magic words are ‘What can I do for you?’ stop thinking in the terms of ‘I’ and ‘me’.

BECOME THE DETECTIVE

As you arrive at the event/place of connection, capture and take in the surroundings on all senses.

Look around for visual signs that may help build the conversation, lie pictures, awards, desk items if it is someone’s home or place of work. If an event, notice who is talking to whom, signals that can lead you to who you need to speak to.

Once you have made the connection, use your listening skills to hone in on specific areas of interest, and powerful questions to get the person talking about themselves, to revel personal things you can build on now, and in the future. (Long term relationships is the true art of networking)

Before moving onto the next person, exchange business cards, and write down some personal points for the future.

Think BIG – Are your goals big enough?

Regular readers of this blog will know I am a big believer it setting goals, the year is flying by so instead of reminding you to review your goals that I know you all set in January; I want to challenge you instead:

SET BIGGER GOALS

It doesn’t matter what the goal is, make it bigger! Often we are held back by imaginary limitations, dream big and you will be surprised what you can achieve. I recently read this story on JEFF ROBERTI blog which beautifully illustrates the point!

How I Learned to Set Really Big Goals from My 7-Year-Old

“My daughter was seven at the time. She loved to play catch, and I did also. The object we threw did not matter: a tennis ball, football, or any ball for that matter. It was the challenge of consecutive catches that mattered very much to her.

There was always the same goal, and only one goal, when we played catch: to break the existing records for consecutive catches.

I remember one day when my focused little daughter said, “Dad, let’s try for 100 in a row.” Since our best at that point was 50, I politely chuckled and said, “Sure, honey.” And guess what, after a few attempts, we did it.

So, the next day she said, “Dad let’s go for 300 in a row.” Well, my daughter was learning about thinking big, but I still had a lot to learn. I thought to myself, “Gee, we just hit 100. Why not try 125 or maybe 150 in a row? But 300?” Of course, out loud I responded with another uneasy chuckle and a “Sure, honey.”

You guessed it. It was only a few days later that we hit 300 catches in a row. I was really impressed and quite content. My daughter was neither impressed nor content, and she was also a lot smarter than me. She said, “Dad, let’s go for 500 now!”

And I thought to myself, “You have GOT to be kidding!” Sure enough, that very same day, we caught 500 throws in a row. You’d think I would be a believer by now, but when her sparkling eyes looked at me and said, “Dad, let’s go for 1,000 in a row!”

I am embarrassed to admit that my internal response was the same.

Less than 24 hours later we hit our record — 1,017 catches in a row!

Our record was over 10 times bigger that I had originally thought we could achieve. Thanks to my 7-year-old daughter, I have finally learned to set BIG goals.

You are only as big and successful as your goals.

So, ask yourself:

1. What is an important goal my team is working toward right now?

2. What is stopping me from increasing it?

Think BIG.

I had to share the story with you, go over the goals you set earlier in the year and make them bigger!!

What’s it like to reinvent yourself?

Reinventing ourselves opens up new possibilities as our mind is more open to new experiences and new way of seeing things. In the same way that you can transform a room by adding a new paint colour, our lives can be transformed just as quickly and as easily with just as much impact. A fresh approach to how we do something helps create new energy and it fills us with an attitude of eager anticipation as we look forward to each new day.

Some may view reinvention as rather false, especially when you look at celebrities who have portrayed one image and have then changed their image to present something new. However one thing is certain and that is that people who reinvent themselves are not resistant to change. In a society where life changes continually it is good to reinvent yourself.

You may know of someone who has transformed their career – perhaps had a revamp of their website, a rebrand of their image or their values. There are many ways in which people reinvent themselves – taking up a new challenge, a change in jobs, learning a new set of skills.

Unveil your masterpiece

Everyone, and I mean everyone, has a masterpiece within them. You know when you meet someone whether or not they are showing you a glimpse of their masterpiece. It’s written all over them –their walk, their talk, their stance, their look. They exude self-confidence. They have a warm and welcoming manner that makes you and others in their company want to know them more. In fact, from the moment they smile you can’t help but smile back.

When you look in the mirror are you smiling back? Can you see a glow in your cheeks, a twinkle in your eye and an aura of happiness so radiant that it makes you happy?

Sometimes we have a huge amount of pain and worry in our lives that it can be very hard to smile in the mirror. A knock-back can knock us so far down that sometimes it is hard to get up. When we’re down and worn-out with very little energy to get out of bed in the morning those negative feelings can be very consuming and powerful. It can be hard to shift those negative thoughts as they keep running around in our mind. But what good are these negative thoughts doing? Are they taking away the pain, the worry and the stress? Are they making you feel good about your life? Of course, they are not! These negative thoughts have a huge effect on the body as stress begins to build and unhappiness takes over.

Sometimes life can be hard, very hard. However the way in which we handle those hard moments is our own choice. Don’t let the negative thoughts build up so bad that the goodness doesn’t shine from every pore. You deserve to be happy. You deserve good things. Fuel your thoughts with praise, goodness, happiness and positivity to unveil your masterpiece. Turn those negative thoughts into powerful POSITIVE thoughts!
