How to feel confident at any time!

con·fi·dence

/ˈkänfidəns/

Noun
  1. The feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust: “we had every confidence in the staff”.
  2. The state of feeling certain about the truth of something.
Synonyms
trust – faith – reliance – belief – credit – credence

What does confidence mean to you? Is it belief in yourself? Trust in others? Faith? Confidence can mean different things to different peopleThe power of incantations and positive self talk but a lot of people ask me ‘how can I become more confident?’ or make statements such as ‘I haven’t got the confidence to do that’. Why haven’t we got confidence all the time? I wish I could promise that just by reading this blog article it will make you super confident, ‘building’ self confidence is a process and hopefully the following tips will help you on that journey to being confident all the time!

Where does lack of confidence come from?

Lack of confidence comes from our belief system, fear of being judged negatively and obsessing about what other people think.

You are the only one who knows everything about you and the only one who has full access to your thoughts, beliefs and real intentions.

If you want to feel confident all the time then your sense of self-worth should come from within instead of making it dependent on the other people you encounter.

When you start feeling unsure of yourself remember: we were all born with confidence, and we can all get it back if we learn to silence the thoughts that threaten it.

Know your strengths and weaknesses

List all the POSITIVE Beliefs about yourself (Things you are good at)

List all the NEGATIVE Beliefs about yourself (Things you are not good at)

Look at the positive beliefs and spend a few moments on each and remember the positive things that happened to lead you to hold on to these beliefs. Write them down……

Look at the negative beliefs and write down your top three..

Ask yourself:

  1. Where did this belief come from?
  2. Who gave me this belief?
  3. How do I feel about this person that gave me this belief? Do I respect them? Are/were they always right?
  4. What is this belief costing me on a daily basis?
  5. What will ‘holding this belief’ mean for me in the long-term?
  6. How will life be different if I let this go of this belief?

As you learn who you are, you gain confidence in your strengths and also learn your weaknesses. ~Angela Birt

Learning who you are doesn’t happen overnight but you have to start challenging negative beliefs that could potentially be holding you back. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, once you know what these are you can work on improving your weaknesses and playing to your strengths. Do not let the past define you!

Confidence comes not from knowing you know everything, but from knowing you can handle what comes up. ~Donn King

Empowering questions

If someone criticizes you, take it is an opportunity to improve. If someone does better than you, see it as an opportunity to learn from them. If you fall short at something, realize you can get closer next time. Don’t worry if you’re not confident in what you can do now—be confident in your potential.

  • What have I learnt from this situation?
  • What will I do differently in the future?
  • What resources do I need to achieve it?
  • How will I know I have achieved it?

Why Books are important to read

I am a self-confessed book-a-holic, I love to read, I listen to audio books in the car while traveling; in fact my car is a driving university! I read biographies, motivational books, self-help books, how-to books, anything that I think can help me.Bookworm

Reading is a great way for anyone to better themselves.  In this digital information age we have become very good at scanning web pages and documents and picking out the bits we think we need to understand. But how much of this can we really take in? Video /  Television are great learning tools but they paint the picture for us, they don’t allow us to use our imagination. Books exercise the creative part of our brains!

By reading books and exposing yourself to different writers you will increase your vocabulary, you will become exposed to new words that you would not come into contact with. “When reading, even when we may not understand every new word, we absorb something from the context that may deepen our understanding of it the next time the word is encountered.”

Reading fiction books increase the creativity in the brain, especially at a young age. This is beneficial because creative people are able to solve business problems, write books and music, and create scientific advances that can aid humanity.

Reading helps to increase your attention span and improves your memory, it helps keep the brain active. Brains are like muscle, use it or lose it!

Your life will be better if you just spend an hour a day reading a book. Turn off your computer, turn off your phone. Disconnect yourself.

Christina Richardson makes an excellent point in the blog post “Marketing” encompasses everything that touches your customer

“However, I subscribe to a different point of view, one that is borne out of my marketing training in some of the most successful branded businesses in the world. In the fast-moving consumer goods industry (FMCG), those in marketing do “brand management” — they run the brand like a little business.

This means that they manage every aspect of the brand — the pricing, how it looks, what it is called, how it tastes/works and the communications about it. Subscribing to this school of thought defines marketing as encompassing every part of your business or product that touches your customer or consumer.”

To improve your marketing and become a marketing entrepreneur I recommend you read the following books:

The Purple Cow- Seth Goodwin

Amazon book description – “You’re either a Purple Cow or you’re not. You’re either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice.

What do Apple, Starbucks, Dyson and Pret a Manger have in common? How do they achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and-true brands to gasp their last? The old checklist of P’s used by marketers – Pricing, Promotion, Publicity – aren’t working anymore. The golden age of advertising is over. It’s time to add a new P – the Purple Cow.

Purple Cow describes something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat-out unbelievable. In his new bestseller, Seth Godin urges you to put a Purple Cow into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly noticeable. It’s a manifesto for anyone who wants to help create products and services that are worth marketing in the first place.”

The Long Trail – Chris Anderson

Amazon Book description: “The Long Tail” is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google.

However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know.”

Hypnotic Writing – Joe Vitalie

“Discover the secrets of written persuasion! “The principles of hypnosis, when applied to copywriting, add a new spin to selling. Joe Vitale has taken hypnotic words to set the perfect sales environment and then shows us how to use those words to motivate a prospect to take the action you want. This is truly a new and effective approach to copywriting, which I strongly recommend you learn. It′s pure genius.”

Reinventing Interactive and Direct marketing – Stan Rob

Attract New Customers and Exceed Revenue Goals with iDirect Marketing!

“A simple concept ties this incredibly useful book together. Every marketer now is a iDirect marketer. You ignore this concept, and this book, at your own peril.”
Al Ries, author of War in the Boardroom

“How do you get your brand heard, trusted, and remembered? The answer is in the confluence of digital and direct to form a torrent of minimal cost/maximal result opportunities. Rapp’s vision of an iDirect future and the insights of the book’s contributors put marketing supremacy in your grasp.”
Tim Suther, SVP, Acxiom Global Multichannel Marketing Services
